Watchdog: DOD Abortion Policy Not Subject to Review by Congress

The Defense Department’s move to reimburse travel for servicemembers seeking abortions out of state is not subject to congressional review, according to a new watchdog report.
The Government Accountability Office memorandum, published Tuesday, adds a new layer of complication to an ongoing blockade of senior military promotions by Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville.
Although the Congressional Review Act (PL 104-121) — which allows Congress to overturn certain federal agency actions — wasn’t necessarily seen as an off-ramp for the holds, the GAO’s decision suggests a lesser role for Congress in overseeing the policy.
