From the introduction: “Some of Machiavelli’s early critics accused the Italian of making available to anyone who could read knowledge about the techniques of political power upon which the legitimate government rested. Knowledge about power always has thus some claim to an esoteric status. Yet his critics overestimated the threats posed by Machiavelli’s dissemination of it by overestimating at once the the esoteric character of that knowledge and its capability of being disseminated. For power, though it is much perceived and often written about, is little understood.”
