From the document: “The Federal Government remains the Nation's leader in veterans' employment, with a governmentwide effort to hire and retain veterans. OPM is committed to providing the policy guidance, leadership, and assistance needed to help ensure Federal agencies reach their employment goals. This report provides a data-driven framework and resource necessary for achieving results.

As of September 30, 2021, the 24 Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Act agencies1 employed a total of 636,937 veterans, which comprises approximately 30 percent of the total Federal workforce. The data in this report is a count of all Federal employees in pay status taken at the last pay period or last day of September 2021, a decrease of just 1 percent since Fiscal Year (FY) 2017. However, Table 1 below shows that of the 636,937 total veterans in the Federal workforce for FY 2021:

• 337,722 (53%) were Disabled Veterans

• 225,411 (35%) were 30% or More Disabled Veterans

• 553,142 (87%) received Veterans’ Preference

This is the highest representation of disabled veterans and 30% or more disabled veterans hired across the government since the signing of EO 13518 in FY 2009. This performance reflects consistency and robust application of veterans’ recruiting efforts concerning disabled veterans.”
